What is a Green Smoothie?

I would love to say that my family has the perfect diet, but we live in the 'real world' and with the junk and toxins that we are constantly bombarded with, it's virtually impossible to get any where close to perfect.  

You may remember a song from the early 90's sung by the group Alabama called "Close Enough to Perfect for Me".  Although the song is about a love interest, it's what came to mind when I thought about the high nutrient value of Green Smoothies.  If I could encourage you to change one thing in your diet immediately, it would be to start drinking green smoothies.  It's probably the tastiest and easiest way to get an abundant source of vitamins, minerals, enzymes and phytonutrients without even having to think much about it.

Several days each week when my girls come home from school I fix a green smoothie for their snack.  It's a super-charged, nutrient dense food that's filling, easy to make and soooo good for them. So, when their diets aren't 'perfect', I can feel good knowing that I've done something great for their developing brains and growing bodies.

If your just not sure how to start then here's a simple recipe that will hide the greens and will satisfy even the most discriminating taste buds:


10 oz. water, or milk of choice (almond, coconut, rice, etc.)

2 cups spinach

1 1/2 cups frozen blueberries

1 tbsp. honey, agave nectar or maple syrup

1 tsp. vanilla (optional)


Blend together in a high speed blender and serve.  The blueberries mask the color of the spinach so if you're serving this to a child they won't be turned off by a green drink.
